Alcohol Addiction Treatment

It is possible to have a drinking problem that has not yet progressed into alcoholism. Alcohol abuse is characterized by drinking too much or binge drinking alcohol. On some occasions, it could cause repeated problems in your life, despite not being fully dependent on alcohol. The earlier alcohol abuse is recognized and addressed, the greater the ability to minimize the consequences of drinking.

Alcoholism and Alcohol Addiction Treatment

Alcoholism, alcohol addiction, or alcohol abuse are all synonymous with a chronic brain disease characterized by the following symptoms: inability to control alcohol consumption, being preoccupied with alcohol, and continuing to use alcohol despite the negative consequences associated with drinking. People?suffering from alcoholism also develop a tolerance for alcohol over time, causing them to need higher amounts and more frequency of use to achieve the same effects; in addition, they also experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms when the use of alcohol has been reduced or completely stopped. Binge Drinking

Binge drinking is characterized by a male consuming five or more drinks in a row and a female consuming four or more drinks in a row. Binge drinking is more common among teens and young adults and can ultimately lead to an onset of alcoholism. When alcohol withdrawal symptoms appear, they typically follow a certain timeline based on when the last alcoholic drink was consumed. The more mild symptoms appear first, following by more severe symptoms and can be broken down as such:

6 to 12 hours after last drink

  • Irritability
  • Anxiety

  • Nausea and vomiting

12 to 24 hours

  • Confusion
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Shaking/tremors

48 to 72 hours

  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations
  • Delirium Tremens

Symptoms may continue to present for several days but should subside after 10 to 14 days.

PHP for Alcohol Addiction Treatment

Someone who is unfamiliar with alcohol addiction and recovery may be surprised to learn how severe the cravings can be and the types of withdrawal symptoms that can linger for weeks, months, or years. These are all reasons why partial hosptialization programs are a great option for individuals in recovery from alcoholism. The strict structure and intense involvement with treatment programs create a routine that keeps clients focused on the road to recovery. Structure and routine can be paramount during the first weeks and months sober. After completing a PHP level of care, clients can proceed to lower levels of care that continue to support recovery in a less structured manner.

IOP Alcohol Rehab

A lower level of care than PHP, Intensive Outpatient treatment provides less structure than PHP but still creates an opportunity for routine and intensive treatment therapies. IOP is a great option for individuals who have completed higher levels of care and are ready to return a normal routine to their life.

Outpatient Alcohol Treatment

As Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) can last for upwards of 2 years, outpatient treatment is a lower level of care that continues to provide long term care for those recovering from alcohol addiction, while allowing clients to return to their daily responsibilities.

Why People Drink Alcohol

The reasons why people drink alcoholic beverages vary from person to person. However, there are usually a number of different factors that increase the risk of abuse or addiction. Major life events such as the death of a family member or trauma can trigger problematic alcohol use if not addressed properly. Regardless of what triggers this risky behavior, the deeper reasons why people drink typically fall into the following categories:

  • To relieve stress caused by a major life event or day-to-day responsibilities.
  • To cope with anxiety and trauma.
  • For social reasons, such as attending a party, event, or other social gatherings where alcohol consumption is encouraged.
  • Alcohol is accessible. Plain and simple, some people drink simply because it is there.
  • To cope with isolation and fill a void or as an attempt to make socializing easier.
  • To suppress feelings such as shame, sadness, inadequacy, etc.
