Addiction Recovery and Life Skills Development

Teaching life skills fosters independence and spiritual growth thus allowing each individual to obtain a basic sense of pride. Seeing what they’ve completed in sobriety. Focusing on activities of daily living, we promote change through action, habits, and responsibility. Rewarding good behavior with positive reinforcement.

Life Skills Development at the Road to Recovery Wellness Center Includes:

Emotional Self Regulation

Individuals participate in a group focused on learning and practicing the ability to manage disruptive emotions and impulses. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to identifying and labeling emotions, identifying obstacles to changing emotions, reducing vulnerability to emotion mind, increasing awareness into present emotions, etc.

Modalities: DBT, Mindfulness, Skills training, and CBT.

Distress Tolerance Skills

Individuals participate in a group focused on learning the necessary skills concerned with tolerating and surviving crisis, and with accepting life as it is in the moment, therefore proving impulsive/self-destructive decisions. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to self-soothing, grounding, radical acceptance, willingness versus willfulness, and functional analysis, etc.

Modalities: CBT, DBT, and REBT, etc.

Cognitive Restructuring

Individuals participate in a group focused on learning to identify and dispute irrational or maladaptive thoughts known as cognitive distortions. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to: Distorted thinking patterns, challenging distorted beliefs, self-monitoring, and questioning assumptions, etc.

Modalities: CBT, including psycho-education, functional analysis, homework assignments, etc.

Social Skills

Individuals participate in a group focused on learning and practicing social skills so they can become socially competent, improve communication, develop refusal skills, and overall improve their social skills and social confidence. This is is a big part of life skills development.

Modalities: CBT, including, but not limited to: modeling behavior, role paying, homework assignments, psycho-education, etc.

Anger Management

Individuals participate in a group focused on learning and practicing the necessary skills in preventing and controlling anger. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to: recognizing the signs of anger, handling triggers in a positive way, self-soothing techniques, monitoring anger, etc.

Modalities: CBT, Homework assignments, skills building, role play, etc.

Vocational Interviewing and Skill Building

Individuals participate in a group focused on learning and practicing the necessary skills to successfully obtain employment and building skills that will help the client navigate more responsibilities. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to: Resume building, mock interviews, assertiveness communication, team building, etc.

Modalities: CBT, Homework assignments, skills building, role play, etc.

Restoring Independent Living Skills

Our life skills development programs allow the individuals to participate in a group focused on strengthening the tasks and functions the client performs, in accordance with their abilities, in order to lead their lives with as much independence as possible. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to: money management, budgets, personal care (dressing, grooming, and hygiene), food preparation, clothing management (laundry, sorting, identification), money management, personal organization (materials and time management), household maintenance, and managing medical appointments, etc.

Modalities: CBT, Homework assignments, skills building, role play, etc.

Mindfulness

Individuals participate in a group focused on developing and practicing mindfulness skills, with the purpose of providing the client with tools to learn how to balance emotions and cope with life stresses without reverting back to the use of substances. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to Jacobson’s progressive muscle relaxation, grounding, observing, describing, and participating, taking a non-judgmental stance, and meditation.

Modalities: DBT, CBT, REBT, etc.

Denial Management

Individuals participate in a group focused on learning how to identify the thoughts, feelings, urges, actions, and social reactions associated with denial pattern, and how these patterns might affect the client’s ability to sustain sobriety. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to Understanding the principles Of Denial Management, Recognizing Denial Patterns, and Managing denial, etc.

Modalities: CBT, Homework assignments, skills building, role play, etc.

Relapse Prevention

Individuals participate in a group focused on developing the skills to manage relapse triggers, in addition to increasing awareness of personal relapse warning signs and learning to manage them. With this purpose, the facilitator discusses several topics, including, but not limited to: Identifying reasons for past relapses, Identifying which area(s) of recovery presents a major struggle, Warning sign identification, and Warning signs management training, etc.

Modalities: Cognitive Behavioral Techniques (CBT) including, but not limited to Functional Analysis, Homework Exercises, and Psycho-education, etc.
