Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol and what it does to the body

If you consume alcohol on a regular basis or drink large amounts at once without stopping for long periods of time, you may develop an addiction to the substance. If your body develops a tolerance to alcohol over time and you begin drinking more than your body requires in order to feel its effects, this could indicate alcoholism.

Alcoholism can lead to serious consequences such as blackouts and tremors (shaking). When paired with other drugs or substances such as benzodiazepines or stimulants, the effects can be dangerous and sometimes fatale. And when mixed with alcohol, the combined depressant can drop your heart rate and breathing down a dangerous amount.

Drinking regularly can increase your risk of several types of cancer, including liver cancer and colorectal cancer. Alcohol abuse is also associated with numerous other diseases and conditions such as malnutrition, organ failure (e.g., cirrhosis), tuberculosis (TB), and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

If you regularly mix drugs or alcohol with another substance such as benzodiazepines or stimulants, there is an increased chance of serious side effects such as stroke or heart attack that could lead to death.
